Companies that use digital technologies are more likely to experience problems in meeting training needs.

While companies in Baden-Württemberg are increasingly investing in digital technologies such as information and communication technologies (ICT) over time, fewer and fewer of them are supporting their employees with further training measures. Assuming that the use of digital technologies in companies causes an increased need for further training among employees, various aspects of this correlation were examined in more detail on the basis of data from the IAB Establishment Panel Baden-Württemberg. Overall, it was found that around a tenth of companies in Baden-Württemberg expect problems in meeting the need for further training.

Baden-Württemberg economy: little momentum in sight.

The weak growth of the previous quarter will continue in the fourth quarter of 2023. Adjusted for seasonal and working-day effects, the gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 0.2%. Together with the negative growth in the first two quarters of this year, this results in an annual growth rate of minus 0.4% for 2023.

Continuing vocational training in Baden-Württemberg continued to rise in 2022.

In the first half of 2022, the proportion of companies in the state that were active in further training increased significantly by 13 percentage points to 48 per cent (previous year: 35 per cent). The proportion was thus once again above the national average of 42 per cent. However, the level from the year before the Covid 19 pandemic (2019: 56 per cent) has not yet been reached again.

Evaluation of the ESF-funded "NRW Training Program" completed.

Six recommendations could be derived from the results of the evaluation based on a participant survey, which could contribute to a better effectiveness of the program or the successor program "Ausbildungswege NRW": Firstly, the target group should be sharpened; secondly, the providers should be empowered to do more public relations work; thirdly, individual support needs of the participants should be identified and ensured; fourthly, internships in the matching phase should be strengthened; fifthly, the empowerment of the participants should be promoted; and sixthly, more intensive and continuous support should be ensured during the duration of the program.

The NRW training program ran from 2018 to 2022 and provided funding for around 1,000 additional training places per year for young people with placement barriers in 34 cities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia where the training market situation was unfavourable.

December 7 and 8, 2023: T H E Christmas Workshop at the University of Hohenheim

The Winter School at THE Christmas Workshop was held by Prof. Andreas Moxnes, PhD (University of Oslo). She summarized the results of a number of recent studies on the importance of international production networks. Against the background of supply chain problems and trade barriers, these findings are important for understanding the development of international value chains and their contribution to productivity and growth.

Nine papers were presented at the Young Researcher Workshop. The Best Paper Award went to Martin Kroczek and Dr. Philipp Kugler (both IAW) for their paper "Heterogeneous Effects of Monetary and Non-Monetary Job Characteristics on Job Attractiveness in Nursing".

The THE Christmas Workshop is a joint project of the School of Business and Economics and the Institute for Applied Economic Research e.V. (IAW) at the University of Tübingen and the Institute of Economics at the University of Hohenheim.

Training participation of companies in Baden Württemberg increased in 2022, but a third of training places remained unfilled.

In 2022, the company training participation rate in Baden-Württemberg developed positively compared to the previous year: both the net and gross training company rate increased again from 52% to 55% and from 29% to 30% respectively. In Germany and western Germany, however, the net training company rates were 3 and 4 percentage points higher respectively. In the 2021/2022 training year, only around 67% of the company-based training places offered in Baden-Württemberg were filled; in the previous training year, the figure was around 72%.
